Chinese New Year in Singapore

Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is the most significant celebration for Singapore's majority Chinese community. Dated by the Chinese lunar calendar, it falls on a different Gregorian date each year, somewhere in January or February, and is observed as a public holiday over two consecutive days.

Families gather for a reunion dinner on the eve, exchange hongbao (red packets), toss the prosperity salad yusheng, and visit relatives during the festive period. Chinatown comes alive with light-ups, street bazaars and lion dances, while the River Hongbao and Chingay Parade are highlights of the season.
