Deepavali in Singapore

The Hindu festival of lights, celebrating good over evil.

Deepavali, the festival of lights, celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. It is the most important festival for Singapore's Hindu community and a gazetted public holiday.

Families light oil lamps, decorate their homes with colourful kolam (rangoli) patterns, prepare festive sweets and visit the temple. The Little India precinct is illuminated with a spectacular annual light-up and street bazaar in the weeks leading up to the festival.
