Hari Raya Puasa in Singapore

Hari Raya Puasa, known elsewhere as Eid al-Fitr, marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. It is the most important festival for Singapore's Malay-Muslim community and a gazetted public holiday.

The day begins with congregational prayers at mosques, after which families visit one another, seek forgiveness, and share festive dishes such as ketupat and rendang. The Geylang Serai bazaar and light-up are a focal point of the celebrations. Because it follows the Islamic lunar calendar, its Gregorian date moves earlier by roughly ten to eleven days each year, and the official date is confirmed by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS).
